The Essenes did not recruit or proselytize.  Although they were a celibate group, they survived by adopting the children of the street, those who came to them for adoption and the children of lower echelon Essenes - those who did not practice celibacy.  The Carmelite Essenes were said to have been non-celibate and married sometimes.  The higher levels of the Qumran Essenes were totally celibate, vegetarian and almost spooky in their adherence to spiritual principle.

Return to Masada explores the struggle of one Essene to fulfill the task he had been assigned, to protect Holiest of the Holies.  He is Zayin, SEVEN, A Cudgel of God.  Subverting his human nature to the divinity of the Essene's ultimate goal, ascension, with the drama of The Battle of Masada raging in the background,  he resolves his conflict between serving those he loves and abandoning the flesh of which he is made.

  Harai's time is now.

There is plenty of evidence in the New Testament that Jesus of Nazareth was not only an Essene, but at least partially if not wholly trained by them.  John the Baptist was most certainly a Qumran Essene.  I've heard reasonable evidence that Jesus may have been a Carmelite Essene.  There were some ideological differences between the Qumran and the Carmelite Essenes mostly lying in the area of strictness of life style.  The Carmelites were not as rigid in their disciplines as those of Qumran.

This leads to the question, if Jesus of Nazareth attained his unique abilities through

studying the Essene disciplines and living among the Essenes, then there were most certainly  others who had achieved the same skills and abilities.

The uniquely paranormal abilities of the Essenes are remarked on by Josephus in his history of Israel.  That the Essenes had paranormal abilities was an accepted aspect of who they were.  If this is true, then it is not unlikely that there were more Jesuses than one, all Essenes, teaching the principles of Essenism, like Jesus of Nazareth did.

The famous questioning of Barabbus by Pilot raises some interesting points in support of this argument.  Earlier versions of the Bible name this man "Jesus Barabbus."  "Barabbus" is a Latinized form of "Barabba" or "Barabbi," literally meaning "Jesus, [bar] son of [Abbi] The Father."  Could it be that Jesus, the Son of the Father trumped Jesus of Nazareth as a result of having an equal to or larger following than Jesus of Nazareth and was a teacher of the same principles - Essene spiritualism?  Both, after all were charged with sedition. Could this explain why "the Master" was seen so many times after his execution?

That John the Baptist was a Qumran Essene is beyond question.  It's certainly true.  That Jesus of Nazareth was recognized by him is supported in the Gospels.  That Jesus was an Essene is supported by his life style and by his teachings.  If what Josephus said about the paranormal abilities of the Essenes is true, and I have found no reason to doubt what he said about this was true, and if Jesus developed his abilities through the teachings of the Essenes, then there were most certainly others like him with the same abilities and the same teachings. It could very well be that the Jesus of the Gospels is a composite character made up of the many Essenes teaching and healing in the same way.

While Return to Masada does not postulate this idea, it does assume that others existed in Israel of the day of Jesus who had the same abilities.  This story,

Return to Masada, is about one of them.

  The Name of the Essenes:

It is widely known that the Essenes did not

call themselves," Essenes."   No historian, so

far as I have been able to determine has

suggested a name they actually used.  I,

however, do have a suggestion.    The FISH

symbol that was so common among those of

"The Way," has multiple layers of meaning.

First, in some of the ancient middle eastern

languages the word, "Netzor" means "a

fish." The phonetic transition is easy to follow

from Netzor to Netzorian to Nazarean, or

"Fisherman."  Secondly, the fish symbol itself

represents a building concept with the two

portions of which it's composed being the two

sides of an arch, lacking the keystone.

A second building concept this can

represent is the image of a floor super-

structure.  This spring-like configuration could

support a tremendous amount of weight.

So.  They were Fishers of Men and Builders

of the Temple - that House not made with

hands, eternal in the heavens. The acronym

that came from the word fish was a handy

thing added later by followers of "The Way.

The letters are the first letter in each word of,

Jesus, Christ, God, Son, Savior.  The letters

spell out "fish" in Koine, the Greek vernacular

of the day.
